William Burt Pope rose to become the leading voice of Methodist theology in the nineteenth century. His labors provided the Methodists with a definitive systematic theology that was matched only by John Wesley himself. His work demonstrated the effective work of God’s grace while simultaneously and successfully defending the free will of man. This kept Methodist understanding free of both predestination and Pelagianism. His was the guiding light for his lifetime, holding at bay those who advocated liberal theology and practice, trendy new theories of evolution, skepticism toward the integrity of biblical scripture, and other troubling doctrines. It was only after he died that such questionable teachings began to gain traction.

This book is Pope’s exposition of the Apostle Paul’s prayers enunciated in his epistles to the early church, dealing largely with entire sanctification. Rather than providing a “step by step procedure” style, the author delves exhaustively into Paul’s dense layers of truth upon truth, observing how the apostle tailors each prayer to meet the needs of his audience.
